Troy School Board Candidate: Cynthia Jo Rasmussen

Cynthia Jo Rasmussen has spent eight years on the board. Here she tells why she should be re-elected.

Why I am qualified?

During my eight years as a member of the Troy 30C School District Board of Education, my goal has been to be a strong voice for quality education for all children of the district.   As a board member, I support policies in such a way as to empower our administration and staff to pursue district goals in a focused manner.

I seek this position to do service to my community. Having lived in the community for almost 40 years, I have been able to look at the schools as a mother, teacher, counselor, grandmother, psychologist, and member of the board of education.

Two of my children are Troy graduates and my daughter is presently a student at Troy Middle School. With this perspective, I can see the both challenges and opportunities in the district. I feel that connecting with the community is crucial so that I am aware of all ideas and viewpoints.

What is one of the biggest challenges at Troy?

One of the district's challenges will be keeping and allocating high quality staff to the district. Being acutely aware of this, I will work toward attracting and retaining quality professionals.

By building this foundation, we are enabling our children to participate in successful programs maximizing all of their potential.

What is my experience?

One of my core values has been to support my schools and community. Learning has always been a passion for me as has inspiring others along their path.  Before receiving my Doctorate in Psychology, I was a special education teacher and counselor. Presently, I am in private practice in Joliet.

Throughout my tenure on the board, I have participated in continuing education focused on the duties and responsibilities of an effective and productive board member.

Beyond these roles, I come with the ability to be open to all possibilities, willing to reflect and listen, and to hold to the highest standards of integrity for my community and myself. In the words of my 95-year-old mother Mary Jane, "Cynthia, always be truly present to others and come from your heart."
