Playoff-Bound Slammers Let RiverHawks Have Season-Ender

The Slammers helped Rockford along with three errors in the Sunday nightcap.

The Rockford RiverHawks smacked three home runs on their way to a 10-3 victory over the Slammers in game two of Sunday’s doubleheader.

The Slammers took the early lead in the last game of the regular season when Josh Flores singled to start the first inning. He stole second base and a walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. One out later a Kris Kasarjian grounder scored Flores to give the Slammers the 1-0 edge.

But back-to-back homers from Evan Button and Jeremy Richter in the second inning off Andrew Moss gave Rockford the lead for good.

The RiverHawks tacked on three unearned runs in the third inning.

With two outs and nobody on, Moss walked Matt Greener. An error by Reid Chenworth on a pick-off attempt moved Greener to second. He scored when Kasarjian dropped a fly ball off the bat of Michael Hur. Luis Parache smacked a home run and it was 5-1 Rockford.

The Slammers did get a couple of runs across in the seventh but it was too little too late. Sean Estand and Ben Hewett picked up RBI singles in the frame.

But the second half of Sunday night's doubleheader mattered for naught as the Slammers will host the Lake Erie Crushers in the first round of the Frontier League playoffs starting Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. “Captain” Jake Renshaw will take the mound for the Slammers.

The Slammers are giving away a souvenir program and after the game there will be fireworks.
