Weekend Wrapup: JCA Tough In Tennis

Led by Alexis Bauer and Taylor Madlener in singles and Shorewood's Colleen Quinn in doubles, the Angels are able to pull out a second-place finish during Saturday's Minooka Quad.

Alexis Bauer and Taylor Madlener won all three of their singles matches Saturday in straight sets as the Joliet Catholic Academy girls tennis team placed second at the Minooka quadrangular.

Although the Angels opened with a 3-2 loss to Providence, they bounced right back with a 3-2 win over Minooka and a 5-0 victory over Bremen.

Against Providence, Bauer (Joliet) won 6-0, 6-1 at first singles and Madlener (Plainfield) won 6-4, 7-6 and 7-0 in the tiebreaker at second singles. The Angels lost all three of their doubles matches.

JCA (2-1) plays Fenwick on Thursday in an East Suburban Catholic Conference match.

SOCCER: The Hilltoppers opened the season with a 1-0 loss at Plainfield South, but JCA coach Tom Cranmer was pleased with the result. “We played well,” he said. “We really had them back on their heels in the last 13 minutes, but we couldn’t get a goal across. We had some goal-scoring chances, but couldn’t capitalize on them.”

FOOTBALL: The JCA freshmen traveled to Mundelein and won 36-28, sealing the deal Saturday with an interception in the final minutes. The JCA sophomores dropped a 28-13 decision Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
