JJC Remembers 9/11 in Public Memorial Tuesday

The event is open to the public and will feature participants from the Joliet police and fire departments and the Will County Sheriff's Office.

Joliet Junior College will honor the memories of those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony Tuesday at the school's main campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet. The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the Alumni Bell Tower in front of the Campus Center. The Will County Sheriff’s Rifle Squad, the Joliet Police Department Color Guard and the Joliet Fire Department Pipe and Drum Unit will also participate in the outdoor ceremony, which will begin at 8:45 a.m. and should last 30 to 45 minutes. Attendees are asked to arrive no later than 8:35 a.m. Following the event, there will be a video tribute in the cafeteria and a presentation by Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan, who will speak about his experience …

Hope For Justice in the Air at Ceremony in Honor of Missing Man

Friends, family and supporters of John Spira sent up hundreds of balloons during a ceremony to honor the missing St. Charles man.

The hundreds of red balloons sent skyward by the friends and family of John Spira read "Justice For John." But the missing man's sister said they held another message for those that might have seen them floating above Winnetka Saturday afternoon. "Those who did this can't rest easy. We're coming after you," said Stephanie McNeil, Spira's sister and the organizer of the event outside New Trier West High School, from which both she and her brother graduated. "We're coming after you and John will have justice," McNeil said before she and dozens of relatives and friends released balloons into the air. The event recognized the fifth anniversary of Spira's disappearance. The St. Charles resident was 45 when he vanished without a trace. He was …

2011: The Year Shorewood Shone

Shorewood Patch set up shop exactly one year ago today, and it chronicled a magnificent year in a fabulous place.

Shorewood has been around for more than half a century, but it was only in the last days of 2010 that it got the notoriety it deserves. Sure, Shorewood’s not that far from Chicago. And it’s right next door to Joliet, a town that supposedly has an almost-daily newspaper. But it wasn't until the Shorewood Patch hatched that Shorewood was put on a pedestal appropriate to its inherent grandeur. Indeed, when the Shorewood Patch showed up everything changed. You see, the Shorewood Patch is all Shorewood, all the time. And even though it officially started on Dec. 28, 2010 — exactly one year ago today — it is really a product of 2011.
