Masked Man Busted After Falling Asleep in Rape Victim's Bed: Police

Daniel Sanders -- a boyhood friend of his 58-year-old victim's son -- broke into the woman's home and held a gun to her head, Joliet police said.

A man wearing a mask and armed with a gun broke into a Joliet woman's home and raped her -- and then promptly fell asleep in the woman's bed with his weapon under the pillow, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said. The 58-year-old victim didn't know her attacker until she was told his name, Roechner said. He was a boyhood friend of one her sons, he said. The attack occurred at about 3:30 a.m. April 18, when Daniel D. Sanders, 25, of 1309 Pawnee, Joliet, broke into a home in the 1200 block of Rowell Street, held a .45-caliber handgun to the woman's head and sexually assaulted her, Roechner said. When he fell asleep, the victim was able to leave the house and had a neighbor to call police, he said. Officers surrounded the house and found …

Neighbors grabbed one of the suspects before he could flee, and he identified the two others who helped carry out the alleged burglaries, Joliet police said.

Three Joliet men who allegedly stole loose change, CDs, cigarettes and other small items from parked cars face felony charges of burglary from a motor vehicle, Joliet police said. A resident in the 1600 block of Peridot spotted the men going through a car at about 2:40 a.m. Monday and alerted others neighbors, who helped grab Kevin T. Schelke, 18, of 1213 Quail Drive, before he was able to flee, Cmdr. Al Roechner said. When in police custody, Schelke identified his accomplices as Jonathan J. Medina, 23, also of 1213 Quail Drive, and Ryan A. Plant, 19, of 4701 Mallard Lane, Roechner said. All three were identified by residents. Man Fondled Young Girls, Police Say

Theodore Edwards, charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, also had the victims touch him sexually, Joliet police say.

A Joliet man who allegedly fondled two young girls and had them touch him sexually was arrested Monday on a charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Joliet Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Theodore Edwards Harris, 39, of 330 S. Joliet St., is accused of having sexual contact with the victims, who are now 11 and 15 years old, on numerous occasions in 2011, Demick said. Harris is described as a family member of the victims. Harris was arrested Monday night at his residence. Demick said the case took a long time to pull together because detectives want to ensure there were no other victims and because Harris was not a threat to other potential victims while serving a prison term at Shawnee Correctional Center at the time the allegations …

Man Feigns Sleep After Firing Gun: Cops

Richard Long was reportedly intoxicated after he shot a weapon from the second-story of his far West Joliet home, police said.

Playing possum pretty much works only for possums, as a Joliet man discovered when he pretended to be asleep after allegedly firing a gun out his second-story window, Joliet Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Richard Edward Long, 53, was reportedly intoxicated after spending Friday night and early Saturday morning at dinner and having drinks with several family members to celebrate an undisclosed occasion, Demick said. When they returned to his 2103 Wesmore Lakes Drive home at about 3 a.m., Long was "acting erratically" and went up to a second-floor bedroom where he reportedly made a lot of noise, family members told police. Shortly thereafter, they heard a loud sound, Demick said. When they rushed upstairs, they found Long pretending to be …

The victim apparently tried to intervene in a fight between her granddaughter and another family member, instigating the attack, Romeoville police said.

Parreno, 30, 604 Sherwood, was charged with aggravated battery of a senior in connection with the incident that occurred at her home at about 5 p.m., Assistant Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said. Joliet Man Busted for Sex Abuse of Teen

Police arrested Luis Loza, who is accused of allegedly having sex with a teenage girl for than two years, according to charges.

A 25-year-old Joliet man who allegedly had sex with an underage girl several times over a two-year period has been arrested by the Joliet police. Luis Loza, of 214 Madison, was booked into the Will County jail Wednesday on three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to Will County State's Attorney's Office spokesman Charles Pelkie. The Class 2 felony charges state that Loza had sex and other forms of sexual contact with the victim, who was identified only as a girl between the ages of 13 and 17. Traffic Stop Prompts Man to Flee Police

Steven Manos was wanted on warrants, and apparently decided to take off as a Joliet officer was returning to his squad to write a ticket and check his record, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

A Lockport man pulled over by Joliet police on a traffic stop gave the officer his driver's license and then stepped on the gas in an apparent attempt to avoid arrest, Joliet Cmdr. Rich Demick said. Steven C. Manos, 24, of 513 N. Reef, was stopped in the 1300 block of West Jefferson Street on Dec. 29, Demick said. However, he must have realized that he was in for more than a traffic citation given that there were outstanding warrants on a felony theft charge and for failure to attend a court hearing, Demick said. His arrest would trigger a violation of his parole on a previous case, he said. Manos was stopped by Joliet police just a few blocks away at May and John streets, at which point he exited his car and made a run for it. Police were…

Neighbor Arrested in Killing of Crest Hill Woman, 89; No Motive Released

Crest Hill police arrested Bruce Gimpel on Thanksgiving morning and charged him with first-degree murder.

Police have arrested a neighbor in the murder of 89-year-old Dorothy Dumyahn, whose body was found Sunday inside her burned Crest Hill home. Bruce Gimpel, 48, who lived next door to Dumyahn in his brother's 2313 Caton Farm Road house, was taken into custody Thursday morning and charged with first-degree murder, Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson told the Joliet Herald News. Gimpel was a suspect early on in the case because of the inconsistent statements he made to police, Wilkerson said. No motive was released as to why Gimpel would stab the elderly woman or set her home on fire to conceal the homicide, according to the story. The Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force handled the investigation, which had the manpower to canvass the …

Man Busted for Choking Wife During Fight, Cops Say

Matthew Morris faces an aggravated domestic battery charge, Joliet Lt. Robert Desiderio said.

A Joliet man who choked his wife when a fight escalated into violence has been charged with aggravated domestic battery, Joliet police say. Police were called to the woman's Joliet home at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday and arrested Matthew J. Morris, 23, who gives addresses of both 358 N. Broadway, Joliet, and 1715 Chicago Ave., Evanston, Joliet Lt. Robert Desiderio said. The woman did not lose consciousness during the fight and she did not require medical treatment, Desiderio said. While typically domestic battery cases -- even when the victim is slapped or punched -- result in misdemeanor charges, police are allowed to escalate the charge to felony aggravated battery when choking is involved, Desiderio said. Morris is being held at the Will …
