Maggie Daley Inspired Women Living With Breast Cancer

Chicago's former first lady died of breast cancer one year ago on Thanksgiving day. Her legacy—that you can live with hope—still inspires people who deal with the disease today.

Maggie Daley’s nine-year battle with cancer was a paradox to those who followed her closely. A public figure by nature, the status of her health and treatment was often common knowledge, yet Chicago’s former first lady did not hold herself out to be a breast cancer spokeswoman. While the cancer center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital bears her name, the causes Daley was most passionate about were unrelated, in fact, including children’s artwork and her efforts to help bring the Olympics to Chicago. A year after she succumbed to breast cancer at age 68, Maggie Daley nonetheless continues to inspire. To those who suffer from metastatic breast cancer — breast cancer that has metastasized to other parts of the body and become deadly — Daley …

But the Plainfield resident, currently preparing to undergo radiation treatment for her second battle with breast cancer in the last three years, has started a movement that will only continue to grow and inspire. Jewett was recently named a Huffington Post Person of the Day, which is awarded to individuals who are confronting issues and making a difference in their communities. Several of the previous events that Jewett had done with Thoughtful Thursdays include volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, writing letters to service men and women and raising money for local charities. Sign Stolen from Salon Offering Free Cuts for Cancer Victims

Salon David Anthony wants customers to know that despite the missing sign, they are still doing free haircuts for cancer survivors through the end of October.

After Joliet Patch wrote about Salon David Anthony offering free haircuts for cancer survivors two weeks ago, anonymous donors came forward to help and a steady stream of customers were taking them up on their offer. However, the numbers dwindled last week after someone stole the sign reading "Free cuts for cancer survivors all month" outside the business, salon co-owner Anthony Roy said. He and co-owner David Schmidt want people to know they are still offering free haircuts to survivors of any kind of cancer until the end of the month. And they are hoping that their sign gets returned. No questions asked. Despite the sign being stolen, Roy said they've seen a great deal of support for their free cuts campaign. One woman came into the …

To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. “Support groups are really beneficial,” says Debra Somerrs Copit, MD, Director of Breast Imaging at Albert Einstein Medical Center, and a member of the medical advisory board for Living Beyond Breast Cancer. “When patients are told they’re sick, it can be an out of body experience and they aren’t taking in everything the doctor is saying.
