Will County Jail Inmate Afraid Guards Going To Kill Him

A Harvey man in jail on a burglary charge out of Frankfort says he is afraid correctional officers will kill him for lawsuits he filed alleging he was beaten and abused.

Six months after he was locked up in the Will County jail on burglary and theft charges, William Jenkins said guards bashed his head against a shower stall wall before pushing and punching him during a strip search. Six months after that alleged attack, the 29-year-old Harvey man said members of the jail's black-clad Emergency Response Team locked went into his cell and beat him so badly he was sent to the medical wing for two weeks. Jenkins sued six different deputies—three in connection with each alleged attack—shortly after the respective incidents. And now he fears he will be killed for blowing the whistle, said his lawyer. "That's exactly what he is alleging," said Joliet attorney John Schrock, adding that Jenkins is in "serious fear …

Woman Nabbed in Break-in Tells Cops She Wanted Cigarettes

Linda Hernandez was found inside the house only minutes after the homeowner had left, Joliet police said.

A Joliet woman who has snuck into a man's house twice in the last three weeks was arrested Wednesday afternoon for burglary, Joliet police Cmdr. Rich Demick said. The victim told officers that he had left his home in the 200 block of Illinois Street at about 4 p.m. but double-backed to retrieve something he forgot, only to find that Linda G. Hernandez, 42, had let herself in during the short time he was gone, Demick said. She had done almost the same thing on Dec. 1, when police arrested her on a charge of criminal trespass to property, he said. In the most recent incident, Hernandez initially told police she "knew (the homeowner) kept cigarettes in his house and she wanted to borrow some," Demick said. She went in when she found the door …

New Lenox Murder Case Returns to Court

A Chicago man charged with a New Lenox Township murder appeared in court Monday. The defendant's attorney asked for more time to go over evidence.

A Chicago man jailed more than a year on murder charges made a brief court appearance Monday. Rodney Julun, 24, was returned to the Will County Adult Detention Facility after his lawyer explained that he needed time to go over evidence recently turned over by prosecutors. "I just did get this, judge, and it's something I'm going to have to look at and review," said defense attorney Michael Renzi. Judge Daniel Rozak set Julun's next court date for Nov. 5. Julun allegedly beat 59-year-old Dwight Jones to death in June 2011. Jones and Julun met on Chicago's South Side, police said, and Jones invited him back to his home for a drink. Julun bludgeoned Jones to death with a lamp, police said. Police said that after killing Jones, Julun returned …

Cops to Shorewood: Lock Your Cars

Start locking your car doors, says the police.

A recent spate of car burglaries has prompted the police to tell village residents to lock their vehicles. "The Shorewood Police Department is currently investigating a number of burglary to motor vehicles," according to an alert broadcast Monday afternoon. "In most instances the vehicle's doors were left unsecured while the car was parked outside. Do not be a victim, lock your vehicle when left unattended."

Hopefully you did also get car insurance. Though not all companies will cover the loss of a car, some might reimburse you if your car was stolen or damaged by a car thief. I am not too sure about stolen car parts though. - http://www.carid.com   more ›

Cops to Shorewood: Lock Your Cars

A rise in the number of vehicle burglaries has the police telling residents to exercise some common sense.

If you don't want people stealing stuff out of your car, you might want to lock the doors. That was pretty much the gist of a Shorewood Police Department "alert" broadcast Monday morning. "Do not be victim, help yourself and the police; lock your vehicle doors at night," the alert said. The warning to Shorewood residents was prompted by "a rise in burglary to motor vehicles in the past month," police said. "All of the victims have left thier vehicles unsecured while parked outside at night," according to the police department alert.

Stop and Go — to Jail

Twice in two years, routine traffic stops enacted by Shorewood police Officer John Coldwater led to arrests in major cases.

Shorewood police Officer John Coldwater was just pulling back onto Jefferson Street from the Jewel parking lot after helping a locked out motorist when he saw a carload of young men pass by, and not one of them was wearing a seat belt. Coldwater got behind the vehicle and followed it to the Interstate 55 frontage road, where he tried to pull it over. The driver seemed at first to cooperate, as he slowed down and pulled into a parking lot. But instead of stopping, the car pulled back out, blew two stop signs and got on 55. Coldwater kept up with the car but when it reached Interstate 80 and nearly ran a cement truck off the road, he broke off the pursuit. But Coldwater got the car's tag number and a good look at all its occupants. And the …

Shorewood Cops Run Down Fugitive Wanted For Gun Store Thefts

The man Shorewood cops chased out of town Thursday and captured Friday was wanted in New Lenox and now faces charges in Joliet as well.

The Joliet men who tossed two guns — one of which was recently stolen in a New Lenox burglary — out of a car as they raced away from the Shorewood cops Thursday have been captured, police said. Shorewood and Joliet officers teamed to raid a house on Joliet's east side Friday night and took into custody both the driver from Thursday's flight as well as a passenger who was along for the ride, police said. The driver, 21-year-old David Magana of 103 Miller Ave., was charged with fleeing police and his passenger — Eduardo Almazan, 19, of 112 Baker Ave. — was picked up on a warrant for possession of drug equipment, officials said. Both men were carted off to the county jail where they remained in custody Saturday. Magana and Almazan were …

Hey Tim, car chases are considered dangerous because people like yourself are considered too precious to risk being innocently hurt or killed by a bad guy trying to outrun the police. It isn't as though these felons are race car drivers operating a car with 450 horsepwr. that just can't be caught. And don't complain when those "eastside boys" have no respect for you and smash into your car trying…   more ›

Update: Shorewood Cops Dive Into Lake Forrest Caper

The Shorewood Police Department issued a public plea for help in solving a break-in from five days ago.

The Shorewood Police Department broadcast a public plea for assistance in solving a burglary in the Lake Forrest subdivision. "We are currently investigating several leads, but are seeking additional information from residents," the police alert said. "Please report any and all suspicious activity in and around your neighborhood." The crooks broke into the house late Friday night or possibly Saturday morning, said Shorewood police Sgt. Jason Barten. The residents returned to their home in the tony subdivision in the early hours of Saturday and discovered the crime. The thieves absconded with money, jewelry and other assorted property, Barten said. The burglars forced their way into the house through a back door, he said, but first cut the …

Holiday Weekend Shorewood Rewind

The weather's starting to not be terrible so get off your computer and go outside. But watch out for the scattered thunderstorms.

Look, we're in the middle of a holiday weekend (unless you were scheduled to work and you're stuck inside at a desk somewhere. If that's the case, just ignore this and skip down to Monday). Like we said, it's a holiday weekend. What are you doing inside playing around on a computer? Get out and do something fun. But not before you check out all the cool things that happened in Shorewood this week. Come on, it's only going to take a few minutes. Really, it will be quick. And not because there was any shortage of greatness in Shorewood this week, but because we here at the Shorewood Patch are fast. Fast and good. Make that fast and outstanding. But enough about us. What about you? And what about what happened in Shorewood this week? Well, we…

Police: Shorewood Cops Corral Car-Crime Crew

The Shorewood police rounded up a band of alleged car burglars early Tuesday morning.

The Shorewood police rounded up an alleged crew of car burglars throughout early Tuesday morning, capturing the fugitive teenagers as they futilely tried to hide themselves under decks and in back yards. The four teens were jailed after officers searched the dark streets of Shorewood for about three hours, then headed over to the Minooka residence of one who somehow made it home, police said. All four — Tremaine Perry, 17, of 1124 Redwood Lane in Minooka, Aaron Lee, 17, of 26149 Raintree Court in Channahon, Khiry McKinley, 18, of 1458 Crowfoot Lane in Minooka, and Antonio Cuevas, 18, of  26309 Riverbend Road in Channahon — remained in custody at the county jail Wednesday afternoon. Shorewood police Cmdr. Eric Allen said an alert citizen …
