Rape Charges Dismissed in Joliet Man's Case

DNA proved Nakita Ulmer could not have been responsible for the sexual assault and an appellate court upheld a judge's ruling that new evidence couldn't be introduced.

Charges have been dismissed against a Joliet man who spent 17 months in the Will County jail for a sexual assault that DNA showed he did not commit. Nakita Ulmer, 26, was arrested Oct. 15, 2009, and charged with home invasion, robbery, aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse in connection with the attack of a 62-year-old Joliet woman, according to a story in the Joliet Herald News. He was released from jail in March 2011 when a DNA expert said the evidence collected could not have belonged to Ulmer, the story said.
