Want to make a real difference in the world? Consider one of these seven "green" careers that help protect—and improve—our planet. Provided by Jobs at AOL.

The following story was provided by AOLJobs.com. By Debra Auerbach for CareerBuilder Have you ever had an itch to quit your job and instead do work that makes a real difference in the world? In honor of Earth Day on April 22, we've compiled a list of seven jobs that help people live a better life – from the buildings they work and live in, to the energy that fuels their homes, to the air they breathe.  1. Conservation scientist: Conservation scientists are hired to help preserve and protect natural habitats. They usually work with landowners and federal, state and local governments to find the best ways to use and improve the land while conserving the environment.* 2. Energy auditor: When a building is cooled or heated, it uses energy. …

Search For Stacy Peterson Day 3: FBI & ISP & A Dog

The FBI and the Illinois State Police spent a third straight day looking for Stacy Peterson in Shorewood's Hammel Woods Wednesday.

The search for Stacy Peterson in Shorewood's Hammel Woods entered its third day as federal agents and state troopers used a dog to hunt for the missing mother. The brown and white dog led a group of a half dozen FBI agents and state troopers—some armed with shovels—through the Shorewood park. The search party headed in the direction of the Hammel Woods dog park off Black Road. A state police source said on Monday that the search effort was nothing more than a routine operation. The agency conducts such searches periodically, the source said, and there was no tip or clue that prompted this week's endeavor. But when FBI agents and troopers returned for a second day Tuesday, and then once again today, some close to the case were wondering if …

Orionids Meteor Shower 2012: Tips for Watching in the Chicago Area

Shooting stars will be flying this weekend in the Chicago area. The Orionids meteor shower promises to be a show worth watching, according to info from the Adler Planetarium.

The offspring of Halley's Comet are about to put on quite a show in the skies around Chicago. Earth will pass through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet beginning Monday, which will give us the benefit of the annual Orionids meteor shower—though you probably won't see much until a bit later. According to Adler Planetarium, the shower is expected to peak in the Chicago area just before midnight Saturday, Oct. 20, and continue until just before dawn Sunday, Oct. 21. The moon sets early that night, which will keep the sky dark enough that—barring cloud cover—you should be able to see about a dozen meteors per hour, according to Adler's information. "Despite not being the most spectacular meteor shower, the Orionids have the most well …

Patch to Open Soon on Chicago's North Side

Five new neighborhood sites in the city of Chicago will open later this month as Patch expands its Chicago-area offerings.

Patch is coming to the North Side of Chicago. Residents of Lincoln Park, Lake View, Roscoe Village, North Center, Bucktown, Wicker Park and Lincoln Square will be the first North Siders to get Patch's unique brand of news, conversation and community celebration later this month. Our web sites operate on the philosophy that an informed, engaged community is a better community. In the summer of 2010, Patch Media set up shop in the Chicago suburbs. Today, 62 Patch sites serve communities from the North Shore to the South Suburbs, from McHenry and Lake counties in the north to Kane, Will and Kendall counties in the west and southwest. For two years, Chicagoans have asked us, "When will Patch come to the city?" To meet the demand, in August, we…

Putting Out Crime's Fires: Mom Talk

Three teens allegedly cold cocked and killed a 62-year-old father of 12 for fun.

We stood in front of the TV news with our jaws dropped. The violence in and around Chicago has made us almost numb. Then this happened. What Malik Jones, 16, and his cronies allegedly did is especially heinous. In a game they called “Pick 'Em Out, Knock 'Em Out” the juveniles reportedly punched a random 62-year-old father of 12, Delfino Mora, killing him. Jones, the alleged puncher, started his phone’s video camera then handed it to buddy Nicholas Ayala, 17. The two, along with Anthony Malcolm, 18, laughed as they walked away, prosecuters said. The teens later posted the video on Facebook. The hours between 3 to 6 p.m. are among the most dangerous, I’ve heard law enforcement say. Kids are out of school, unsupervised until their parents get…

Agony of the Ecstasy: Cook County Cop Tells Joliet Drug Kid 'Stop Crying'

The Sun-Times reported that a Cook County cop told a Joliet teen up on drug charges to "stop crying."

A Joliet teen charged with possessing ecstasy pills and laughing gas turned on the water works in court and was told by a Cook County deputy to "stop crying," according to a report in the Sun-Times. Tyler Schmidt, 17, was in court Sunday following his Saturday night arrest in Chicago. Schmidt was picked up during a traffic stop for allegedly holding nitrous oxide and MDMA pills. "He appeared highly agitated Sunday during a brief appearance before Judge Adam D. Bourgeois," according to the Sun-Times story, which went on to describe  Schmidt's conduct in the courtroom. "His attorney repeatedly warned him not to harm his defense by talking to the judge. And after Bourgeois set his bail at $25,000, Schmidt sobbed as he was led from court. '…

(Not) Coming to America Police Blotter

What's $60,000 in pounds sterling?

A Hermans Lanes woman told police she has given up on a London man to whom she has wired tens of thousands of dollars in hopes he will come to Joliet and marry her. The woman wired more than $60,000 over the course of six months starting in November, according to the Will County Sheriff's Department. The woman "believed (the man) was going to come to Joliet to marry her," reads a statement released by the sheriff's department. "She now believes it was a scam." Four men took a cab ride from Chicago down to Joliet and then tried to beat the fare by running off. Police corralled the four soon after they split while the cabdriver was filling up his ride at a Jefferson Street gas station. Arnell Lowery, 20, of 708 Grant Ave., Darrell Oliver, 19…

Downtown Joliet Bomb Scare — Update! — Everyone Safe

A Monday morning bomb scare forced the authorities to shut down North Chicago Street to Jefferson Street but it turned out not to be a bomb after all.

A Monday morning bomb scare forced the closure of North Chicago Street up to Jefferson Street but it turned out there was no bomb after all. The suspected bomb ended up being packages containing a DVD player and a cell phone deposited in a FedEx box near the corner of Chicago and Jefferson streets. "It was somewhat defaced before it was (placed) in the dropbox," Deputy Joliet Fire Chief Ray Randich said of the cell phone box which was placed in the FedEx box by an unidentified woman. The Cook County Bomb Squad responded and appeared to X-ray the FedEx dropbox before removing the two packages. "It was an electronic device that was being returned," Randich said of the suspicious packages. "At this point it was determined there was no threat…

Shorewood's Mark Carlson Featured On Deadspin

Shorewood's own Mark Carlson was featured today on Deadspin.

Major League Umpire, Most Interesting Man in Troy Township (2011) and erstwhile Shorewood Patch blogger Mark Carlson was spotlighted in Deadspin's ongoing feature Better Know an Umpire. The piece profiles Carlson's professional work, listing the leagues he umped in before making the bigs, his height and weight, uniform number, and this "claim to fame:" "Causing Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano to completely lose his mind in May 2009. Video showed Carlson's call was correct, and Zambrano was suspended for six games." While Carlson called Shorewood home while he was blogging for Shorewood Patch, we recently heard he and his family moved to Florida. We just gave him a call on his cell to ask but haven't heard back yet. Interestingly, the Deadspin…
