Silver Cross Hospital offering free box of Dan’s Candies with heart screenings for those who register before Feb. 28.

Chocolate is good for your heart. How’s that for good news? According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), small amounts of dark chocolate can be good for your heart. Regular screenings are also good for your heart.  A sponsored article by Silver Cross Hospital “Heart disease is the nation's number one killer, and women are its prime target,” says Dr. Kathleen Drinan, a cardiologist on staff at Silver Cross Hospital. “One in 10 women ages 45 to 64 has some form of heart disease, and this increases to one in four women after age 65.” Some women are at a higher risk for developing …

Roll Out the Barrel in the Shorewood Village Hall

It's going to be OK to drink in village hall during the H.U.G.S. fundraiser.

The Shorewood Village Board cleared the way for guests at the Hugs & Wishes Chocolate Ball to drink alcohol, if that's what they're into. The ordinance approved by the board last week allows the sale of alcohol for the Feb. 4 fundraiser at village hall. The Hugs & Wishes Chocolate Ball, which was organized by the philanthropic group H.U.G.S., will raise money so they can grant wishes to those in need from the Shorewood area. Money raised by the ball will also support Shorewood's Veteran's Memorial. Tickets for the ball are are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. The event will feature entertainment by Michael J. Perkins, a free chocolate martini for each attendee, raffles, silent auction, appetizers, cash bar and taste some of the finest …

Experience the Art of Chocolate

Celebrating the season at Aunt Nina’s

With Halloween right around the corner, a lot of folks, kids and grownups alike, have candy on the brain. Whenever the subject of candy comes up – I recommend  local favorite, Aunt Nina’s Sweets & Treats on Division Street in Crest Hill. Owned and operated by chef and master chocolatier Michael Tessone and his wife Christine, the store, formerly of Shorewood, has expanded to include over 7,000 squares feet of confectionary goodness. The bulk candy section alone is an amazing sight to behold with everything ranging from gumballs to gummies. It also houses a nostalgic section where even the hard-to-find “old-fashioned candy store” candy can be found.   Care for something crunchy? The gourmet popcorn selection will delight and amaze you with …

Wishing with Chocolate

The "Hugs & Wishes" Chocolate Ball raises funds for Shorewood H.U.G.S. and the village's veterans memorial.

Never did it feel so good to eat chocolate as it did on Saturday night at the “Hugs & Wishes,” second annual Chocolate Ball. Shorewood H.U.G.S., a local charity that grants wishes in the Shorewood area, transformed village hall into an inviting venue. Over 300 people attended the Chocolate Ball. The event raised funds through selling tickets to the ball and a silent auction. The proceeds will support Shorewood’s Veterans Memorial and the group’s “Hugs & Wishes” Program. Immediately following the event, Laura Charland, public relations director of H.U.G.S., said she was unsure of the final total collected. “This event produces a large amount of our funds for the Hugs & Wishes Program,” said Shorewood H.U.G.S. president Heidi Serena. “We’re …
