Convict Suing Joliet Paper Says Wrong Photo Ran With Sex Abuse Story

A woman locked up at Decatur Correctional Center is suing the Joliet Herald-News for allegedly running her picture along with a story about another woman sexually abusing children.

Attilah Shaw is doing time in Downstate Decatur Correctional Center—but not for the crime she read about in a Joliet Herald-News story that allegedly included her photograph above the name of the culprit. Shaw, 40, filed a lawsuit against the Herald-News claiming the newspaper libeled and defamed her when they ran her picture with a story about a woman charged with molesting children. That woman, Marlena Hammond, also 40, was convicted of the aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a family member. She is pulling a six-year prison sentence at Logan Correctional Center in Downstate Lincoln. Shaw is locked up not far from Hammond at Decatur Correctional Center. She's in for aggravated driving under the influence and driving with a revoked or …

Child Porn Convict Comes Home With Cop—Ordered to Stay Away: Petition

A man awaiting sentencing on a child pornography conviction he caught for secretly videoing his naked teenage stepdaughter showed up at his former home in Joliet with a police officer to collect his things.

When Timothy Zak went to court May 7 to be sentenced to as many as seven years in prison for secretly videoing his naked teenage stepdaughter, he was allowed another month of freedom before learning his fate. The day after his sentencing was postponed, Zak returned to the scene of the crime, turning up at the Joliet home where he had set up a hidden camera to record his unwitting stepdaughter, according to a petition filed by Zak's wife. "On this date Timothy Zak showed up at my residence with a Joliet police officer who had been given the impression that Timothy and I were having some marital trouble and he wanted to come pick up some of his belongings,"  Zak's wife said in her petition for a protective order. The wife filled the cop in …

Driver Gets 5 Years For Running Over & Killing Man Lying in Street

A Joliet man took a five year prison sentence for drunkenly driving over a man lying in the road.

A Joliet man was sentenced to five years in prison for running over a person lying across East Washington Street. Vincent Borgic, 61, had been found guilty of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol at the conclusion of a trial before Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak earlier this year. Borgic ran over Scott Zolecki in July 2011. Zolecki was intoxicated and lying down on East Washington Street at the time. "Borgic, who admitted coming from a bar, told police he never saw the victim before running him over with his Dodge Challenger at about 10:30 p.m. that night," according to a statement from Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow's office. "He told police he had no idea what happened." But witnesses testified at the trial that other…

DNA Test: Alleged Hickory St. Killer Landerman is Baby's Father

The mother of Adam Landerman's baby daughter sobbed as she left a court hearing establishing the alleged killer's paternity.

Three months before Adam Landerman and three of his pals were charged with a grisly, nightmarish double murder on Hickory Street, a young woman from Lockport accused him of fathering her child. On Friday morning, Landerman, 19, learned he is the father of a 1-year-old. Judge Brian Barrett said a DNA test performed on Landerman in the Will County jail "came back 99.9 percent you're the father." Landerman was taken in chains from the jail so he could attend the hearing. The child's mother, Tiffany A. Rachal, sobbed as she left the courtroom after finding out Landerman is the father of her child. A woman embraced Rachal in the courthouse hallway but declined to discuss the revelation. "We're not interested in commenting today," said the woman…

Former Joliet Resident Gets Nearly 9 Years in Fed Pen For Ponzi Scheme

A former Joliet resident was sentenced to eight years and 11 months in federal prison.

James Brandolino raked in $3.75 million while running an investment fraud scheme over the course of seven years. A federal judge gave him eight years and 11 months in prison for it. Brandolino, 44, had pleaded guilty to mail fraud in August 2011. Judge Elaine Bucklo also ordered Brandolino to pay $3,865,484 in restitution. Brandolino, a former Joliet resident, also agreed to pay another $128,576 to managed account holders who suffered trading losses. Brandolino bilked about 60 investors, many of them family and friends, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office. "He lured investors with promises of healthy returns and principal safety, and he fabricated account statements showing steady gains, convincing investors to …

Crest Hill Ex-Con & Sis Indicted on Federal Gun & Conspiracy Charges

A Crest Hill man was out of state prison less than a year when he and his sister picked up a federal weapons case.

A plot hatched by a Crest Hill ex-convict and his sister to run guns up from Missouri was thwarted by undercover federal agents, prosecutors said Thursday. Richard "R.J." Carrino, 28, and his 24-year-old sister, Angela Marie Carrino of O'Fallon, Mo., were indicted on federal charges Wednesday. They allegedly conspired to have Angela Marie Carrino make illegal straw purchases of at least five firearms in Missouri and ship them to R.J. Carrino in Illinois. The charges resulted from an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The siblings gun plot started in November and continued through February, according to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The Carrinos "discussed types of guns …

DCFS Wants Alleged Hickory St. Killer's Kid Stripped Naked For Exam

The Department of Children and Family Services wants to subject the 18-month-old daughter of alleged Hickory Street killer Bethany McKee to a naked examination to see if she has been abused.

The parents of one of the four alleged Hickory Street killers have refused to let the Department of Children and Family Services strip their granddaughter naked for an examination, and the agency now wants a Will County judge to order them to hand the child over. But Judge Paula Gomora wouldn't go along with the DCFS bid to strip-check the 18-month-old daughter of Bethany McKee. Gomora said DCFS failed to provide any information about the abuse allegations they are investigating. "Maybe that's what I'm supposed to be, the rubber stamp so you can gain entry, but I'm not convinced from what's been provided that that's what I'm supposed to be," the judge told DCFS attorney Cynthia Gonzalez. "You have to give me at least something to hang my …

Lawyer For Teen Charged With Sex Abuse of Boy Wants Psych Records

A Will County judge will decide whether the lawyer for a Plainfield teen can pursue the psychiatric records of the boy he is charged with sexually abusing.

The lawyer for a Plainfield teen charged with sexually abusing a child is trying to get a hold of the boy's psychiatric records. "I'm not making this request to embarrass or be insensitive to the alleged victim in this case in any way, shape or form," said Neil Patel, the attorney for 19-year-old Jason Minger. Rather, Patel said during a Friday morning court hearing, "The state has indicated that the victim will testify," and the information may prove useful when questioning the boy while he is on the witness stand. According to Patel and to court papers he filed, the boy was undergoing counseling when he told his mother Minger sexually abused him, but he had never mentioned it to the counselor. After informing his mother, the boy also …

A Matteson man charged with a deadly shooting on Nicholson Street pleaded not guilty to murder charges during his arraignment Friday morning. Man Accused of Abuse by 'Serial Killer's' Ex Pleads, Gets Probation

A man charged with battering the pregnant ex-girlfriend of alleged Hickory Street killer Joshua Miner is supposed to stay away from her while he is on probation.

Ivon Walsh claimed she lost three unborn babies while enduring abuse at the hands alleged Hickory Street killer Joshua Miner, but Miner was never charged with harming her. Walsh then said a later boyfriend, 22-year-old Brandon Haggerty, "made (her) miscarry" a fourth time when he beat her in July, and for that Haggerty was sentenced to a year's probation. Haggerty, a Plainfield resident, pleaded guilty just before he was to stand trial Thursday on charges of aggravated battery to a pregnant woman and domestic battery. As part of his probation, Haggerty was ordered to stay away from Walsh. While the indictment and complaint against Haggerty mention nothing of Walsh having a miscarriage after the attack, and he did not admit to it in his …
