Courtroom Drama: Prosecutor Stars in Play Directed by Defense Attorney

Joliet defense lawyer Michael J. Renzi, of New Lenox, and assistant state's attorney Fred Harvey put their professional differences aside to work some dramatic magic in a production of "12 Angry Men."

The last thing assistant state's attorney Fred Harvey needs is some rogue juror swaying the other 11 and snatching a dead-bang guilty verdict out of his hands. But that's exactly the role Harvey is playing in the Drama Group's production of 12 Angry Men. Lucky for Harvey, the play is being directed by defense attorney Michael J. Renzi, who might have a little more sympathy for the Henry Fonda character and the way he steers the rest of the jury toward an acquittal. Harvey, a Joliet resident working in the Will County State's Attorney's Office, and Renzi, who lives in New Lenox and practices in Joliet, cross paths each day on the fourth floor of the downtown courthouse. Shorewood's Smith Steals Show At JCA

Alessa Smith starred as Miss Adelaide in Joliet Catholic Academy's spring musical, "Guys and Dolls."

Dreams do come true at Joliet Catholic Academy. For senior Alessa Smith of Shorewood, her dream was to play a certain character who sings her way through boyfriend troubles: Miss Adelaide. “I have wanted to play Adelaide since I was in sixth grade,” Smith said. “My favorite musical is Guys and Dolls and when I got the part, I was absolutely thrilled — just to be living the character and the songs.” She owned both. As they say on Broadway, Smith stole the show at JCA's annual spring musical, Guys and Dolls, at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park Theatre in downtown Joliet. Billed as a musical fable, Guys and Dolls was performed by members of the JCA Drama Club, which is moderated by Jennifer Szynal. In her sixth year as a teacher at JCA, …

JCA to Stage 'Guys and Dolls'

Joliet Catholic Academy's spring musical will be held from March 15-17 at the Bicentennial Park Theatre in Joliet.

In the 1955 film adaptation, Frank Sinatra starred as Nathan Detroit, Marlon Brando as Sky Masterson, Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide and Jean Simmons as Sarah Brown in the classic musical Guys and Dolls. At that time, they were known as the best of the best in Hollywood or on Broadway. Likewise, many of the best from the Joliet Catholic Academy Drama Club — moderated by Jennifer Szynal — will be on display as the college preparatory high school for boys and girls stages its annual spring musical, Guys and Dolls. Wilmington’s Nick Humbles will handle the role of Nathan Detroit, while Naperville’s Sam Juveland steps in as Sky Masterson. Shorewood’s Alessa Smith, a senior, is Miss Adelaide and Naperville’s Theresa Gallo, also a senior, is …
