6 Local Library Districts Leave Consortium to Form Small Cooperative

White Oak, Lemont, Joliet, Plainfield, Fountaindale and Shorewood-Troy libraries have joined together to form the cheaper, more efficient Pinnacle Library Cooperative.

Some changes are in store for patrons of six local library districts. Starting April 10, cardholders will only be able to place items on hold at districts belonging to the new Pinnacle Library Cooperative: White Oak, Lemont, Plainfield, Shorewood-Troy, Fountaindale and Joliet. The six districts have split from the larger PrairieCat Consortium to form the new group. Fountaindale Executive Director Paul Mills, chairman of the Pinnacle governing board, said the primary motivation of the new cooperative is to provide better service to patrons. "(The six libraries) have a shared history of collaboration, so we're looking to build on that history with Pinnacle," Mills said. I have two problems with the claims by Pinnacle librarians. Items coming from Prairiecat libraries will take longer to arrive than previously since they will now be coming from "out-of-system". Prairiecat's catalog currently allows for items to go to the patrons of the owning library before going elsewhere, so the items owned by a Pinnacle library should have been filling that library's patrons' …   more ›

New 'Great Read' Book Explores Life-Altering Technology

In the first of several programs through spring, "Hamlet's Blackberry" author William Powers discusses his book Thursday night via Skype.

It is probably most appropriate that the kickoff to this year’s Great Read program uses the Internet-based Skype video-conferencing to chat with author William Powers. After all, in the book, “Hamlet’s Blackberry,” Powers examines the history of communication technology and how technology has impacted our lives. “Hamlet’s Blackberry,” published in 2010, is this year’s choice for the Plainfield area’s Great Read program, which begins with a Skype discussion with Powers at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Barnes & Noble, 2621 Plainfield Road, Joliet.
