Settlement Deal Offered in Civil Case For Deadly Melissa Lech Hit & Run

The civil case against a Naperville man who allegedly ran down a young woman from Joliet and then fled, leaving her to die, has a settlement agreement on the table.

The family of a 20-year-old Joliet woman left for dead on the side of McDonough Street has offered to settle a wrongful death lawsuit for $250,000. The settlement deal calls for attorneys representing the estate of University of Illinois student Melissa Lech to get $84,325.09 of the settlement. Half of the remaining $165,674.91 will go to Lech's mother, Maria Lech. Melissa Lech's two sisters, Monica and Michelle Lech, would split $82,837.45, according to court papers. Melissa Lech, a Plainfield South High School graduate, was run down on McDonough Street in August 2008. Shorewood Man Who Survived Massive Head Injuries in 2003 Recovered Enough to Get Arrested on Battery Charge

A local man who was left clinging to life in an Olympia Fields hospital after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver is now in the county jail.

In 2003, David Fonza was run down on West Jefferson Street in Joliet and left to lie on the street with head injuries so severe they took a pair of brain surgeries to repair them. On Monday, Fonza was in the Will County jail, apparently sufficiently rehabilitated to allegedly batter his sister. Fonza, 52, of 1004 Robin Hill Drive was arrested on Monday and was still locked up at the county jail Wednesday night. He is being held on a $500 bond. Fonza and his sister quarreled Monday, said Shorewood Police Chief Robert Puleo. The argument escalated, the chief said, with Fonza calling his sister an obscene name and then striking her. The sister went down to the police station. Officers listened to her story and then headed over to his Robin …
