Matthew Boban was arrested on several charges stemming from the Saturday crime spree, including driving under the influence of drugs, Illinois State Police said.
A Joliet man who stole a woman's purse and then fled in a stolen car, only to crash into a semi on Interstate 80, was arrested Saturday on a slew of charges, including driving under the influence of drugs, Illinois State Police said. Matthew J. Boban, 32, of 521 Mack, was charged after being treated at Silver Cross Medical Center in New Lenox for injuries suffered during the crash. The incident began shortly after noon Saturday when Boban allegedly snagged a woman's purse while in the parking lot of a Joliet Jewel-Osco store at 1401 W. Jefferson St. and then fled in a car taken from a friend, state police said. There was a second person in the car, but it's not known if it was the car's owner. Volunteers in the community take in animals from Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Illinois, Joliet location after the road leading to the shelter floods out.
Late Thursday, when the rain had mostly subsided, Illinois State Police shut down NW Frontage Road, off Black Road in Joliet and HART Animal Shelter had to find emergency foster homes for their animals. As of 8 p.m., Thursday night, the Facebook status of HART Animal Shelter, at 18644 NW Frontage Road in Joliet, said the following, "All animals and volunteers are safe! Thanks for everyone's help!" it stated. The shelter is located along NW Frontage Road off Black Road in Joliet, a road that Illinois State Police confirmed was shut down Thursday night. The victim has been identified by the coroner's office as a 51-year-old man from Massillon, Ohio.
A crash between two truck tractor semi-trailers at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 near Houbolt Avenue has left one person dead, according to the Illinois State Police. Westbound lanes of I-80 were closed for several hours but have since reopened. The collision started a fire, according to the Will County Coroner's Office. The victim has been identified by the coroner as Richard S. Gustaveo, 51, of Massillon, Ohio. Two other people were injured and treated at the scene. The state police issued this statement, but have provided no other details. "The cause of this crash is currently being investigated by Illinois State Police District 05. Further details, when available, will be forthcoming in additional press releases."

Illinois State Police said the accident happened around 8:49 a.m.
Upated at 2:46 p.m. March 30 Two vehicles were involved in a crash on westbound Interstate 80 near Minooka early Saturday. According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened around 8:49 a.m. when one vehicle side-swiped another while heading west on I-80 west of mile marker 118. One of the vehicles came to rest in a ditch, but no serious injuries were reported in the crash, police said.

A man changing a tire on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 55, near Joliet's U.S. 30 exit, was struck by a dump truck this morning, according to the Illinois State Police. The victim, whose identity was not released, was transported to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. His condition is not known, Sgt. Scott Angus said. No information on the truck driver, including his identity or whether he was ticketed or arrested, is yet available, Angus said. More details should be available later. The crash, which is still under investigation by Illinois State Police and Grundy County Sheriff's Police shut down Interstate 80.
A 66-year-old Bridgeview resident was killed Friday night in a traffic crash on Interstate 80. Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan reported the name of the deceased as Abed M. Bader, 66 of Bridgeview. "Bader was working for a medication delivery service catering to nursing homes in the area," Callahan said in a written release." The accident was caused by one truck clipping another, forcing the second truck into the median, according to the Illinois State Police.
Update 8:25 p.m. A Chicago man was seriously injured Thursday when his semi-truck was clipped by another semi on Interstate 80, forcing his vehicle into the grassy median west of Briggs Street, Illinois State Police Sgt. James M. Powell said. The accident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when a truck traveling in the right lane of westbound I-80 pulled into the left lane and collided with a second truck already in that lane, Powell said. The impact caused the second truck to veer into the center median. The truck driver, 38, was badly injured and transported to a Joliet-area hospital in critical condition. With snow falling since this morning and temperatures right on the freezing mark, streets are slushy and, in some spots, a little treacherous.
Update/3:15 p.m. Tuesday: The winter storm watch has been changed to a winter weather advisory, which is in effect until 9 p.m. Expect a combination of rain, snow and sleet this afternoon and evening before the storm passes through our area. The National Weather Service says we could get between three and five inches total, and that the situation will be exacerbated by winds clocking in at as high as 35 mph. With temperatures right at the freezing mark, wet snow has been falling fairly consistently since later morning and is causing some roads to be predictably slippery. Two filing cabinets in the roadway Saturday night were to blame for two separate crashes on Interstate 55 northbound. Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said the two vehicles, a van and a passenger car, both swerved to avoid the cabinets in the road. "One vehicle swerved and ended up in the ditch," he said. "The second unit rolled over." The crash happened at mile marker 251, which is near the Interstate 55 and Interstate 80 interchange. The crash was at about 8:40 p.m. Four adults were taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. No tickets were issued in the crash.
