This scarefest has a lot of charm.
I was prepared to despise The Cabin the Woods based on its previews, and until the last minute, I debated going to see Chimpanzee instead. I am so glad I took a pass on the primates and opted for the horror instead. There’s nothing subtle about Cabin (and subtlety is overrated anyway), but there’s enough humor and tongue-in-cheek (more like tongue-on-the-floor-after-it’s-been-chopped-off) pop culture references in this one to keep even the most desperate-for-amusement moviegoers intrigued. The premise seems like one we’ve all heard before: Attractive college-aged kids decide to escape for a weekend to a remote destination, enjoying their time “off the grid” and entertaining nature-based possibilities like swimming, off-road motorcycling …

Feel the "Wrath" of Liam Neeson’s Hair in this clunker.
I’ve alluded to this before, but 2012 is shaping up to be the hairiest year ever on the silver screen. Wrath of the Titans, with the main characters’ long manes and Orthodox-length beards, even outshags The Hunger Games, which I proclaimed “an early candidate for the most Hirsute Film of 2012.” Is there a barber strike in Los Angeles or something? Any enterprising hairdresser could make a fortune by setting up a salon at Hollywood and Vine. Meanwhile, this same trend also puts the Shorewood/Joliet/Plainfield area at the cutting edge of popular culture. These days we’re best known for mustaches and male use of hairspray, as exemplified by the incarcerated Drew Peterson and his arch-nemesis, our finely coiffed and muscle T-wearing Will …

Will County law enforcement members have seen a shift from cocaine use to heroin use over the last three years.
Will County States Attorney James Glasgow had a message to share Monday night in Channahon. He wanted to spread the word that use of heroin has reached epidemic levels and that parents need to be hypervigilent to stop it. “Our kids can pick up a hit of heroin for less than the price of a movie ticket,” he told Channahon Village Board members Monday night. “We’ve got to get the message out to the parents in the community at the grass roots level; you can't be asleep at the wheel.” Glasgow said that about three years ago, those involved in law enforcement saw a shift from the use of cocaine to heroin. Although both are terrible for the community, the chance of overdose is much higher with heroin use. “We’re on a pace for 60 fatal overdoses …

Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow briefed Shorewood's leaders on the new law he drafted that outlaws synthetic marijuana.
Just hours after Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan trumpeted a new Chicago ordinance carrying a fine for selling synthetic marijuana, Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow took a poke at the logic behind the city law. "You would never think of passing an ordinance fining someone $500 for selling a child heroin," Glasgow told Shorewood's village trustees during their Tuesday night meeting. And that's why, Glasgow said, he researched and drafted a state law that will make the sale or possession of synthetic marijuana a felony in 2012. "We're going to go after (synthetic marijuana) aggressively on Jan. 1," Glasgow said. Sold as an incense product often labeled "not for human consumption," synthetic marijuana is clearly marketed for …

A group devoted to keeping the case of missing Bolingbrook mother Stacy Peterson in the public eye is participating in a fundraising walk in Shorewood Saturday. Team Stacy Peterson is taking part in Groundwork's 5K walk to honor victims of violence, bring awareness to the community, and raise funds to continue its programs. Drew Peterson's legal team failed again to get the accused wife-killer out of jail.
Drew Peterson's lawyers have failed to get him out of jail more times than the serial marrier has wives. A fifth bid to get the accused wife-killer out of the Will County jail apparently fell on deaf ears at the Illinois Supreme Court late Monday. Peterson has been locked since May 2009 on charges he murdered his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Peterson has been in legal limbo since prosecutors appealed a ruling on hearsay evidence the day before his trial was to start in July 2010. Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow lost that appeal but then filed a motion for leave to appeal to the state Supreme Court in August. That petition remains pending. Peterson is being held on a $20 million bond. His attorneys contend he should be free while …

A statement released by the office of Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow says prosecutors have yet to decide whether they are going up to the State Supreme Court.
Thwarted by the appellate court, prosecutors in the Drew Peterson murder case may still go up the ladder in their bid to get as much hearsay evidence as possible admitted at trial. A statement released Tuesday night by Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow's office said prosecutors continue "to review the ruling and will make a decision about whether (they) will file an appeal with the Illinois Supreme Court." Earlier Tuesday, the appellate court released its opinion denying a prosecution appeal of Will County Judge Stephen White's decision on what hearsay evidence can be used against Peterson, a disgraced former Bolingbrook cop charged with murdering one wife and suspected by the state police of having a hand in killing another. The …

Drew Peterson's third wife was killed more than seven years ago. His fourth wife has been missing for three and a half years. Peterson has spent the last two years in a jail cell waiting for a jury to decide his fate.
Two years ago tomorrow, Drew Peterson climbed inside his missing fourth wife’s Pontiac Grand Prix, pulled out of his cul-de-sac and drove away to run some errands. Peterson didn’t make it a mile before a small army of state cops descended on him, pulled him out of the car, snatched off his sunglasses and took him to jail. Peterson has sat there since, waiting in the Will County Adult Detention Facility to be tried on charges he killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio. In the two years Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, has been locked up, one of the sons he had with his slain third wife was named valedictorian of Bolingbrook High School. A son he had with his first wife lost his job as an Oak Brook police officer due to his …
