Letter: JJC Overbuilds, Then Needs Cuts

The cost of operating and maintaining new buildings is proving to be an unfair drain on Joliet Junior College's budget, JJC board candidate Brad Baber says.

In response to Karen Sorensen’s article “JJC May Shut Fitness Center to Help Close $1 Million Budget Deficit”: What I have been saying for two years is now front and center.  Building so many buildings so quickly, the annual budget of JJC cannot absorb the operating and maintenance costs without serious growing pains. Since 80 percent of the annual budget is staffing costs, when in trouble, that’s the easiest and among the only thing to cut. JJC has cut staff over the last year by attrition and by eliminating positions. That reduces services and programs.  At the same time, a tuition increase is planned to pay for a new Multipurpose building, which primarily is to hold graduations-$21.55/credit hour increase if they did it all at once. The…

JJC May Shut Fitness Center to Help Close $1 Million Budget Deficit

The center has been a long-standing part of the Joliet-based school, but has consistently operated in the red for the last several years, officials said.

Joliet Junior College's Fitness Center lost nearly $300,000 in the past year, making its closure a possibility as administrators look for places to trim $1 million from the 2013-14 budget. The suggestion was presented at the JJC Board's workshop meeting Tuesday, along with proposals to evaluate the school's Renaissance Center and Child Care Center, both of which also operate in the red. This is not the first time the fitness center has been proposed for closure. The idea was broached more than a year ago, and impassioned pleas were made by staff and students to keep it open. Beyond that, an internal audit of the center was conducted last year and suggestions made on ways to make facility more efficient and economical, yet the deficit …

Cockroaches in JJC Coffee Machine: Suit

A Joliet Junior College student and two school employees claim they found cockroaches in coffee they bought from a vending machine in the JJC cafeteria.

A Joliet Junior College vending machine dispensed unwanted cockroaches along with cups of coffee, a student and two school employees claim in a lawsuit filed Tuesday. JJC student Bobbi Smith and employees Gary Broyles and Richard Anderson all said they got cockroaches they didn't want in their coffee in the summer of 2012. Smith, Broyles and Anderson are suing Hometown Suburban Vending for allegedly allowing cockroaches to infest the coffee machine. It was the "duty" of the Oak Lawn company to "provide vending machines that dispensed beverages that were free and clear of contamination by insects," the lawsuit said. A woman answering the phone at Hometown Suburban Vending said no one was available to discuss the allegations of cockroaches …
