New director has expertise and an eye towards technology.
On Monday afternoon, as Dianne Harmon and Kevin Medows addressed the media on Harmon's last day as Library Director, Harmon's middle son waxed nostaligic about growing up as her son. "Libraries and books, these really have been really important to her," Matthew Harmon said of his mom. When Matthew Harmon was a child, his mom was at the Shorewood-Troy Library and he and his siblings could ride their bikes to visit their mom at work. Dianne Harmon said her kids would come out and eat lunch with her. When she moved to the downtown branch of the Joliet Library they were initially devastated. "In their minds, it was a long way away," she said. To acclimate her kids with the new location, Dianne Harmon arranged a tour of the downtown building …

Like you, we here at Joliet Patch were shocked and saddened by the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 26 people dead -- 20 of them children. So, when we heard that teachers at the Newtown, Conn., school were seeking help in creating a winter wonderland to greet students when they returned after winter break, we recognized a chance to make a difference. We partnered with the Joliet Public Library, and we are sponsoring a two-day event that will provide the materials needed for the public to make snowflakes. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, the downtown and Black Road library branches will have a drop-in craft area set up in the children's department for making snowflakes. It will be offered again from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. …

When Shorewood-Troy and Joliet libraries finalize their new consortium Thursday, patrons should expect only a minor impact.
Joliet Public Library is proud of the fact that they have never limited access to checking out books or electronics or electronic devices to Joliet library card holders. And that will not change Thursday, when the library joins Shorewood-Troy Public Library and four others in a new consortium - Pinnacle Library Cooperative. The two libraries formerly were part of PrairieCat, which had 70 member libraries. "It had grown too large," Joliet Public Library Director Dianne Harmon said of PrairieCat. "We felt that we would have a lot more flexibility in how we designed the service." One of the issues that troubled the two libraries was the idea of delivering books. Under PrairieCat, each of the 70 libraries would offer books to patrons of their …

White Oak, Lemont, Joliet, Plainfield, Fountaindale and Shorewood-Troy libraries have joined together to form the cheaper, more efficient Pinnacle Library Cooperative.
Some changes are in store for patrons of six local library districts. Starting April 10, cardholders will only be able to place items on hold at districts belonging to the new Pinnacle Library Cooperative: White Oak, Lemont, Plainfield, Shorewood-Troy, Fountaindale and Joliet. The six districts have split from the larger PrairieCat Consortium to form the new group. Fountaindale Executive Director Paul Mills, chairman of the Pinnacle governing board, said the primary motivation of the new cooperative is to provide better service to patrons. "(The six libraries) have a shared history of collaboration, so we're looking to build on that history with Pinnacle," Mills said. Plainfield Library Director Julie Milavec said the smaller catalog group…
