Shorewood's village employees don't get the day off today.
The Village of Shorewood is open for business, despite this being the day of recognition for Martin Luther King Jr. and his mission to bring equality. Village workers have to be on the job today, but the Troy Township offices are closed in observance of the Martin Luther King holiday. The Will County offices also are closed today. As far as Shorewood Patch, we're alway on the job. So don't hesitate to call or drop us a line if there's something you think we should look into.

Erin cheers the teen mom who protected her newborn with a shotgun.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had it right with his non-violent approach to changing the world. There are any number religious, political and social reasons I could cite as to why I believe we should turn the other cheek. And yet, when the teen mom in Oklahoma was faced with an intruder coming through her door with a knife, I cheered to learn she blew him away with a 12-guage. Sarah McKinley, 18, was in her mobile home alone with her 3-month old son on New Year's Eve. (Her husband, 58, had died on Christmas Day of lung cancer.) That's when Justin Martin, 24, and his alleged partner in crime, Dustin Stewart, 29, were reportedly looking for drugs that were prescribed to the deceased. Even some government offices will be open on Monday's Martin Luther King holiday.
There is no disputing the accomplishments and sacrifice of Martin Luther King Jr. Yet for all he did and all he gave, not everybody gets the day off in his honor or holiday pay for working it. Not, for example, the employees of the Village of Shorewood, including the police department. Village Hall and the administrative offices of the police department will both be open for business on Martin Luther King Day just as they would be on any other Monday. The Troy Township Fire Department, along with all the other township offices, will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Schools in the Troy and Minooka districts also will be closed. County offices will be closed Monday.
