Man Dead Following Route 59 Cycle-Truck Crash

Plainfield police say they do not know what caused a Shorewood man to lose control of his pickup truck and roll into oncoming traffic, killing a motorcycle driver.

A Naperville motorcycle driver was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by an out-of-control pickup truck that crossed a Route 59 median and rolled into oncoming traffic, Plainfield police said. Route 59 was closed for hours between 135th Street and 143rd Street as police reconstructed the accident in which George A. Weikum, 58, was hit while driving his 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Route 59, just north of Joseph Street, according to a police report issued Saturday night. Police did not spectulate on what may have caused David C. Dietrich, 32, of Shorewood, to lose control of his 2005 Ford pickup at about 4:30 p.m. Dietrich's truck crossed the center median, rolled over and struck Weikum. Weikum was pronounced dead…

Life in the Slow Lane

Shorewood Trustee Dan Gron calls for increased speed limit on newly improved Route 59.

With the reconstruction of Route 59 completed in Shorewood, village Trustee Dan Gron wants officials to consider upping the speed limit. Not only that, but Gron wants the various speed limits throughout the village to be reassessed and made more consistent. Gron pointed out that the speed limits in Shorewood are "35 here, 45 there, 40 there," and that he would like officials to take a "scientific approach" to bringing them in line with each other. The analysis of the various speed limits on Shorewood's Streets would apparently include determining whether to raise the limit on Route 59 from 35 mph. Gron, the chairman of Shorewood's Finance & Budget Committee, raised the issue of speeding up traffic on Route 59 during last week's village …

Be Kind, Shorewood Rewind!

The royal wedding? What's that?

We just found out there was some big wedding in England a few days ago. Whatever. It wasn't in Shorewood. And that means we don't care. And even if it had been in Shorewood, we still don't see what all the fuss was about. Come on, just look at these two. Neither one of them is particularly attractive, and we're not experts on the royal family, but as far as we at the Shorewood Patch can tell, none of them have really accomplished much of anything, at least not in the last century or so. Do any of these people even have jobs? Before we get too worked up about the royals' lack of achievement, we have to take a step back and concede that we shouldn't be expecting much out of them in the first place. After all, England's pretty much a second-…

Village Leaders Look to a Prosperous New Year

Community officials list their New Year's resolutions as they peer into what lies ahead in 2011

With a new year quickly approaching, people reflect on the one that's passing and think of ways to make this new year better than the last. It's no different for Shorewood village officials, who want to build on the last 12 months as they head into 2011. Mayor Rick Chapman called this year "painful" due to the economic slump affecting retail and commerce as well as Shorewood's homeowners. But the mayor has faith Shorewood's economy will soon improve due to the completed reconstruction of one of Shorewood's main commercial corridors. The Illinois Route 59 Reconstruction Project cost $89 million and included the addition of two lanes in each direction, 10 miles of new curbs and gutters, left turn lanes at major intersections, traffic signals…

It's Back to Business on Route 59

Construction is complete along Shorewood's main commercial corridor.

Steve Kolliopoulos remembers the feeling of victory. The owner of Matty's Grill & Pancake House was looking out his windows at Route 59 near Black Road. As Kolliopoulos watched the construction crews removing the last road barricades, he knew he was a winner. "When you make an investment you need to protect it; otherwise you'd be a loser," Kolliopoulos said. "I was watching out there; the workers were picking up the last of the barricades. I was so happy." When Kolliopoulos opened the doors of Matty's last spring, road construction on Route 59 was in full force. The $89 million-project, which widened the street from two to five lanes, took just more than two years to complete. Nancy Roman, economic development director of Shorewood, said …
