Giving Back: Animal Walk, Special Olympics, Friends of the Library and More

Those interested in giving back to the community will have plenty of chances to do so in the near future. Below, check out a list of upcoming volunteer and fundraising opportunities.

WHAT: Run 4 Ronald Fun Run WHEN: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 29. Race-day registration will begin at 9 a.m., with the race set to start at 1 p.m. Games will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. WHERE: Beecher Community Park, 901 Game Farm Road, Yorkville WHY GO? The one-mile fun run will include costume judging, hair feathering, a bounce house, face painting, raffles and games. Additionally, all profits gained from the event will benefit the Ronald McDonald Family Room in Edward Hospital. NEED TO KNOW: Game tickets will be available for purchase after the race, which will be held rain or shine. Never too old to Learn a New Trick

Seniors can help others while staying busy and learning new things.

"You stay young as long as you can learn; acquire new habits, and suffer contradiction." -- Marie Von Ebner Eschenbach Seniors living in Shorewood have many opportunities for learning something new and acquiring new habits. The Troy Township Community Center located at 25448 Seil Road in Shorewood has various activities for seniors to do just that. One group is highlighted in this column. On Mondays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Joliet Quilters Guild meets to undertake various quilting projects, the end products of which they sometimes raffle off to raise money for non-profit organizations. When I recently retired from my job as office manager for the Troy Township offices, the group surprised me with a beautiful quilt signed by each quilter…

Tenants Moving into Growing Senior Living Community

A new independent living community in Shorewood is filling up fast, and more construction is planned for the coming year.

Shorewood will be ringing in the new year with new neighbors, a whole campus of them. The seniors this campus serves are not in high school or college. In fact, not just anybody can live there. In order to be a resident at Shorewood Horizon, 820 W. Black Road, you must be older than 62. Shorewood Horizon is a new independent living community for senior citizens. As of now, 10 single-story villas are finished and rented, and tenants are moving in. Come April, another building with 40 one- and two-bedroom apartments will be completed, according to Beth Demes, the executive director of the Alden Foundation, the developer.  "They move in with us, and it's an instant social life for them," she said. Baby Boomers vs. Rocking Chairs

Rocking won't get you anywhere.

As "baby boomers" such as I attempt being "seniors," it seems at times not to be a comfortable fit. We are the rockers of the 60s but we are not quite ready for the Cracker Barrel rockers just because we are now in our 60s.  We were protesters, world changers, the ones who wanted it all. We marched for peace while at war with the system, government, our parents and even ourselves. Now in our 60s, many of us still want peace but possibly now it's peace of mind. We are at war with a government who may be trying to mess with this peace by changing the game plan for attaining happy, healthy, peaceful and secure retirement years.
