Former L-Way Teacher Up on Threat Charge Needs Psych Exam: Lawyer

Former Lincoln-Way teacher Ryan Gardner will be examined to see if he was legally insane when he allegedly made threats against district officials.

A former Lincoln-Way Central High School teacher charged with threatening school district officials may have been legally insane at the time of the incident, his lawyer suggested during an arraignment Friday morning in Will County court. Ryan Gardner, 40, most recently a resident of downstate Danville, has been jailed since Jan. 16 on a felony charge of making a telephone threat. Prior to his being processed at the Will County jail, Gardner was receiving psychiatric care at University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. He had checked himself into the hospital voluntarily. Medicine is a Family Business for Shorewood's Newest Doctor

After stints in pharmaceutical engineering and medicine on the South Side, Vincent Benig brings his family medical practice home to Shorewood.

There is a new doctor in town, and local families are his business. Vincent Benig is the newest doctor in Shorewood. To hear him talk about how he came to be here, each stage of his career is interwoven with his own family milestones. He does not tell you about his engineering degree from the University of Illinois or his two years working at a pharmaceutical company without mentioning that is when he married his wife, Sandy. Nor will he say he also went to the University of Illinois for medical school without next saying that's when their first daughter, Lily, now 13, was born.
