4 People Injured in 2 Crashes on I-55

Interstate 55 northbound was shut down for a time in Troy Township as Illinois State Police cleaned up the crashes and the cause of the crashes.

Two filing cabinets in the roadway Saturday night were to blame for two separate crashes on Interstate 55 northbound. Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said the two vehicles, a van and a passenger car, both swerved to avoid the cabinets in the road. "One vehicle swerved and ended up in the ditch," he said. "The second unit rolled over." The crash happened at mile marker 251, which is near the Interstate 55 and Interstate 80 interchange. The crash was at about 8:40 p.m. Four adults were taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. No tickets were issued in the crash. Icy Roads Cause Crashes, Scary Conditions

Black ice was to blame for accidents up and down Interstate 55 and Interstate 80 and on area roads.

Black ice on interstates and local roads caused spinouts and fender-benders Monday night, but no serious injuries, according to the Illinois State Police. "It started about 5:30 p.m.," District 5 Master Sgt. Jeff Padilla said. "We had a bunch." Black ice is a thin, usually clear sheet of ice that is often invisible to drivers. Because it is invisible, drivers cannot adjust speed or incorporate other driving techniques to stay safe on the road. Monday was the first time this area has had snow or ice in these temperatures. In fact, had the area not seen snow on Monday, it would have tied an all-time state record. The accidents spanned the area, with crashes along Interstate 55, Interstate 80 and Interstate 57 as well as local roads. There …

Your lame excuse for a unprovoked attack makes me laugh opinion8ed. Yes I have nothing but negative things to say about the fire dept. here. They used to be a volunteer dept. which rarely lost buildings to fires. Now that they are fully staffed and paid hourly, it seems that they have lost every building they have battled against. Second you were close on me hating something...it's not the world …   more ›

I irritate other drivers by doing only 15 MPH over the limit and pass no one! The game of the road now days is just to pass some one no matter how fast the guy ahead of you is going. Anybody who gets pulled over for speeding has a good excuse... "everybody else is speeding!" And they're right! Everybody IS but only a very small percentage get caught. This is why states are looking to pass "nanny …   more ›
