Waste Managed: Escaped Con Caught Hiding at Rockdale Waste Management — Update!

A day-long manhunt ended in the capture of a prisoner who made a daring escape from a Department of Corrections van.

The police captured an escaped convict who made a daring leap from a Department of Corrections van and then hid out on top of a truck for a ride to Waste Management in Rockdale.

Cesar Sanchez, 37, was caught at the Waste Management facility shortly after 8 p.m., a source said. The source also said Sanchez was hiding in a portable toilet.

The Department of Corrections later confirmed that Sanchez was indeed caught inside a portable toilet by the Waste Management facility.

The manacled Sanchez, who was incarcerated at Stateville Correctional Center for nearly the past year on a parole violation, was heading back to Stateville from the Bridgeview courthouse when he leaped out the side door of a moving Department of Corrections van and fled on foot before his guards could get him back.

The van was traveling through Lockport Township on Farrell Road when Sanchez made his escape, said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sharyn Elman. The fugitive reportedly injured a leg jumping from the moving van but still ran off quickly enough to evade capture.

Elman said Sanchez was the only prisoner in the van.

After getting away from his captors, Sanchez hid out on a truck bound for Rockdale.

Elman said Sanchez did not deliberately head for Rockdale, but seemingly just went where the truck was taking him.

The police searched that small town five miles east of . Officers went door to door and helicopters hovered overhead.

"They were shaking the house," said Rockdale resident Tina Emery Swanson, who received an automated call about the escape from the police.

Sanchez was paroled in October 2009 after serving prison time on cases dating back to 1995. Sanchez was sent to prison on Cook and Kane county convictions for burglary, drug possession, misuse of a credit card, aggravated battery, robbery, retail theft, and receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle.
